Module 10: Making Disciples — Meeting 2

Meeting 2

REVIEW the disciple’s notes and thoughts on the journey through the last nine modules. See the Looking Back resource as a guide.

Why Looking Back Matters

Throughout Scripture, God’s people are called to remember. After crossing the Jordan River, Joshua told Israel to set up twelve stones as a memorial so that future generations would ask, "What do these stones mean?" (Joshua 4:6–7). Remembering what God has done builds faith for what he will do next. This meeting is your chance to set up your own "memorial stones" — to look back over the Discipleship Pathway and see how God has been at work.

How to Use the Looking Back Resource

Set aside time before this meeting to read back through your journal and notes from each module. For each one, ask:

  • What was the outcome of this module? How well is it now part of my life?

  • What practice or assignment had the biggest impact on me?

  • What did I learn about God? About myself?

  • What was hardest? What would I like to keep working on?

  • Is there a specific moment or story I want to remember?

A Quick Review of the Pathway

Here is a short summary to help your reflection:

Questions for Your Discussion

  • Which module changed you the most? Why?

  • Which practices have become part of your everyday life?

  • Look back at the goals you set in Module 0, Meeting 4. How has God answered or reshaped them?

  • How has your relationship with your discipler grown over this journey?

  • What are you most grateful for?

For the Discipler

Share specific changes you have noticed in your disciple’s life. Be concrete: "I remember when prayer felt awkward for you, and now you pray naturally for others." Encouragement at this stage builds confidence for the next step, when the disciple invites someone else into a discipling relationship.

Preparing for What Comes Next

Before Meeting 4 of this module, the disciple will invite someone to be discipled. Keep praying about who that might be. Ask God to show you a person of peace, perhaps someone you identified in Module 8, who is hungry to grow in their faith.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have not grown as much as I hoped?

Spiritual growth is often slow and hard to see from the inside. Your discipler may notice changes you have missed. Remember that the Pathway is a beginning, not the end, and God is patient.

What if I lost some of my notes?

That is okay. Use the module pages as prompts to remember what you learned. The conversation with your discipler matters more than a complete record.

Should I finish every module before I disciple someone else?

It is best to complete the Pathway if you can, but what matters most is a willingness to walk with another person in following Jesus. Talk with your discipler about the right timing for you.

ASSIGNMENT: Watch the Missional Velocity video by Alan Hirsch located below. Take notes using the Missional Velocity Video Questions located on Module 10 Meeting 3. Come ready to discuss it with your discipler at your next meeting.

Also, continue to pray about who you will invite into a discipling relationship, if you have not already made a disciple during your own journey. (You’ll invite someone onto the Pathway before Meeting 10.4.)

Continue the Pathway — You are in Module 10: Making Disciples, Meeting 2 of 4. Previous: Meeting 1 — Thomas the Disciple Maker. Next: Meeting 3 — Missional Living. Every essay, worksheet and video for this module is collected on the Module 10 resources page.
